FAQ's

Is it hard?
This is one of the most common questions we get asked, and it's a difficult one to answer. The learning curve with kitesurfing is slightly different than that of sailing or windsurfing - it's relatively easy and fun to get started bodydragging, but it can take a while to get your first boardstarts down, and many people find this stage frustrating. Once you are passed this stage, a lot of people improve rapidly and some are doing their first tricks within months. The biggest problem with kitesurfing is getting enough time on the water - a few days in a row with wind helps you improve rapidly.

Is it safe?
Like any sport, there are risks involved with kitesurfing. It's important to learn to identify and minimise these risks, and this is something we spend a lot of time on in the lessons. We use the newest kites with modern safety systems, and all students wear helmets and buoyancy aids. Our class sizes are small, and our instructors are always on hand to keep you safe.

Insurance - what's the story?
LSD Kiteboarding is an IKO centre and we have IKO centre insurance covering the lessons. After your lessons you will need to get your own third party insurance to cover you. The best place to get this is through the Irish Kitesurfing Association - www.iksa.ie. You can sign up online and pay through paypal. The fee is only €60 for the year, and by joining the IKSA you get a 10% discount in our kiteshop - meaning you can save a lot more than the cost of membership!

My kid wants to learn - what age does she/he need to be?
We generally take students from age 13. We will need parents to stay involved and in the area so we can explain some of the major safety aspects of the sport. Ideally the parent would do the lessons too. Our instructors have many years experience teaching sailing to young people, and we can put parents in touch with the parents of other young kitesurfers who may be able to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have.

What do I need to bring?
We supply nearly all you need for your lessons - Kites, boards, harnesses, helmets, buoyancy aids, etc. We can also supply wetsuits, just make sure to ask before your lesson.

You will need to bring:

  • A sturdy pair of shoes suitable for the beach
  • Warm waterproof/windproof clothes
  • Sunglasses
  • A towel and swimming togs
  • A wetsuit and booties and gloves if you have them
  • A bit of lunch and maybe a thermos of tea

What do we do for lunch?
If you are doing two lessons in the day, we generally take one hour for lunch. We can order food from a local restaurant for you before your lesson so it is ready for lunchtime, or alternatively you can bring a packed lunch.
